The metadata set was created for a personal postcard collection. Only six postcards are included in the collection but they represent a variety of postcards with different styles, coverages, originated countries, collection history, etc. The metadata set includes a metadata schema, application profile, crosswalks, element specifications and a best practices guide. Metadata elements covered Dublin Core, CDWA Lite, VRA Core and self-created elements within "SU" name space. The metadata schema was created with Oxygen Editor.
  • Created a metadata schema, application profile, crosswalks, element specifications and a best practices guide
  • Created sample metadata records for the collection
  • Metadata elements covered Dublin Core, VRA Core and CDWA Lite
The study examined the library website to decide if the site navigation is logical and easy for users to find information needed. Two common user scenarios were selected: 1) search for guidance on APA citation; 2) search for information of software installed on the public laptops and three participants were recruited for the web usability study. The study were conducted with Morae Recorder which users' navigation activities, including screen cast, mouse hover and clicks, and users' performance can be recorded. The participants were also required to complete a survey after each task. The data collected was later analyzed with Morae Manager and usability report and recommendations were provided based on findings.

  • Selected user scenarios and defined tasks for evaluation
  • Conducted usability tests with three recruited participants and analyzed testing data with Morae software
  • Created usability report and provided recommendation based on findings

The article briefly introduces the concept of authority control and the advantages that the authority control brings for information retrieval activities. The article then discusses how authority control is accomplished by utilizing metadata standards and authority files. A local digitization project is introduced as an example to illustrate the need for local authority file in meeting the need of local collection and initiated the debate of centralization or decentralization of authority control. The paper concludes that authority control should be enforced centrally to guarantee the quality and consistency of authority control.
